David Scott, who has devoted over six decades to Scotts of Thrapston, recently celebrated his 80th birthday, surrounded by family and close friends. As the third generation to lead the company, David’s visionary leadership and relentless drive transformed Scotts of Thrapston from a family business into a nationally recognised brand. His influence has guided the company through periods of significant change, growth, and enduring success.
Scotts of Thrapston, a Northampton-based company that marked its centenary in 2020, employs 120 staff and has earned a reputation for excellence. David, the grandson of the founder, is credited with expanding the company’s horizons and ensuring its continued legacy.
Now, the business is in the capable hands of David’s son, James Scott, who serves as managing director and represents the fourth generation of Scotts to lead the company. On his father’s milestone birthday, James paid tribute to the man who was not only his father but the driving force behind the business’s long-standing success.
“I’m incredibly proud of everything my father has accomplished at Scotts,” James shared. “He dedicated so much of his life to the business, working long hours and attending key events like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 1964 and every Burghley Horse Trials. His passion for the company was unmatched, and I’m grateful to him for everything he’s done.”
To mark the special occasion, a bespoke cake in the shape of a Scotts Burghley Summerhouse was presented to David, complete with a figure of his beloved Scottie dog, Dottie, sitting outside—a heartfelt nod to his personal and professional life.
Reflecting on the celebration, David said: “I had a wonderful time at Rushden Hall with family and friends. It was such a meaningful day, made even more special by the thoughtfulness of my family and the beautiful cake. It’s an absolute honour to still be part of this incredible family business after all these years.”
David has taken on the role of chairman while James now oversees day-to-day operations. Yet, the Scotts legacy continues to thrive, deeply rooted in their love for craftsmanship and the beauty of wood—a legacy that spans over a century and four generations.
“For as long as I can remember, we’ve been a company defined by our passion for timber and craftsmanship,” said James. “My father played a vital role in shaping the business, and his dedication to producing beautiful, high-quality products is ingrained in our work to this day. We’re proud to still be a family-run company, and we’re fortunate to have a loyal team that shares in this journey.”
David’s imprint on Scotts of Thrapston remains strong, from the innovative products he helped launch, like their signature timber summerhouses, to the relationships he cultivated both locally and nationally. His tireless efforts and passion for the business are still felt, even as he enjoys a well-deserved celebration of his remarkable life and contributions.
